Cost savings not key advantage

In a survey conducted by Computer Economics, the surprise conclusion was drawn that the key advantage of open source software was not its free or low price tag as many had expected.

The survey asked its readers / visitors to rate the importance of five aspects of open source:

  • 44% - Reduced dependence on software vendors
  • 22% - Lower total cost of ownership
  • 17% - Easier to customize
  • 14% - Do not see a significant advantage
  • 3% - Higher level of security

"Open Source is more stable and better supported"

This is the view of Jonathan Schwartz CEO of Sun Microsystems in an interview with the The Times of India.

He goes on to state that the adoption of Open Source Software is increasing rapidly. One important reason for this is the reduction in IT budgets.

The most rapid adoption of Open Source has taken place in areas of rapid economic growth, large student populations, which have high Internet bandwidth - such as India.

Don't use Open Source? You'll miss the boat
