Singapore: SMEs most likely to use open source

An article on AsiaOne Business by Amit Roy Choudhury sums up research by the IT research agency IDC.
Key points:
- Interest in open source software is growing in Singapore
- SMEs (small & medium enterprises) are leading this trend
- Other adoptees include: government, telecomms and financial services
- The public sector is building an "eco system" to make it easier to adopt open source
- Most in-demand open source apps: supply chain management, business analysis, operating systems, virtualisation
- Linux is seen as "secure" for "mission critical" applications
- Not much adoption of open source: databases, CRM, application
- Main "fear" concerning open source software is the perceived lack of open source software skills (both internally and externally).
These trends are set to continue over the next 18 months with a "large number" of SMEs reporting that they are planning to adopt open source software.
